9 Reasons NYC is a Great Place to Live

Growing up on movies like 13 Going on 30, You’ve Got Mail, and When Harry Met Sally, I’ve always thought New York City looked like an incredible place to spend some years in my youth. It’s pictured as a city of vibrancy, diversity, opportunity, and a haven for people who prefer to live in the fast lane. Since I graduated from college, I’ve spent the last five years in Austin, which as wonderful as it is, is no New York. So, when my longtime boyfriend got a job in the Big Apple, I started contemplating a move there. Then, he proposed. We’re getting married in Austin in December, and then I’m moving up to NYC to join him! I’ll finally get to live out my lifelong dream of living in New York City as a new bride!

Here are some reasons I’m thrilled about my impending move!

1. Plenty of Activities

New York City is bustling with activities to do, whether you’re rolling solo or with college buddies. There’s plenty of happy hours, launch events, gallery openings, and music performances to fill anyone’s social calendar. The city gives opportunity to meet new folks and experience new activities, many of which don’t even cost money. I landed a job at a well-known NYC advertising company, so I’m sure there will be no shortage of events I’ll get to attend for work. Plus, I can’t wait to spend my Saturdays strolling through Central Park or getting lost in the shelves of the New York Public Library.

2. Better Quality Friendships

The sheer population density of New York City may be suffocating at times, but it seems to form lifelong bonds (at least on TV). Friends are connected by a collective sense of ambition to succeed, which is likely what brought most to the city in the first place. I mean has anyone seen Sex in the City or Friends?!

3. Trains You to Be Tough

NYC will force me out of my comfort zone. I’ll be learning new ways of life, like rushing to work via the cramped confinements of the subway train, walking five blocks from the grocery store to our apartment, and figuring out how to cram everything into our tiny place. I’m thrilled for the new adventure.

4. Trains You to Be Efficient

Time management is not exactly my forte, but I know this is an especially important skill to have in NYC. There are simply too many variables that could go haywire at the very last minute. Subway trains can get delayed or even stopped without warning, sunny days can easily turn into unabated storms, electricity can get shut off across the entire city. These situations teach you to be tough but, more importantly, it also trains you to be more efficient in the face of adversity.

5. Central Park

In Austin, everyone hits the Town Lake Hike and Bike trail that encircles Lady Bird Lake for their morning run. In New York, those lucky enough to live close to Central Park can hit the trails on the 778-acre patch of land in the middle of Manhattan. Like I mentioned before, I can’t wait to spend time frequenting this urban green space. After all, it was in the magical Central Park where Harry realized his love for Sally and where John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale’s characters spent a romantic evening skating at Wollman Rink in Serendipity.

6. Diversity

While Austin is fairly diverse, NYC takes diversity to a whole different level. Since its days as the hub of immigration, NYC has attracted a diverse populous. Here, residents speak an estimated 200 different languages and nearly 40% hail from foreign countries. New York City is a great place to get a glimpse of other cultures and embrace ethnic diversity, especially when it comes to eating!

7. Celebrity Sightings

I am known for loving an afternoon spent poolside with the latest glossy issue of People magazine. And while I’m not one of those people who is celebrity obsessed, I think the prospect of stumbling across one on the streets of NYC is still exciting. From Jim Carrey to Leonardo Di Caprio, Patrick Stewart, and Nicole Kidman, the list of celebrities you can meet and greet in the Big Apple is simply immense.

8. Rich in Art

Whether you’re a fan of folk art, fine art, religious art, conceptual or artistic design, mosaic, painting, or even live performance art, New York City has a range of art galleries and museums that are open year-round. I’m most looking forward frequenting The Met’s 2 million square foot gallery on 5th Avenue.

9. Professional Sports Teams

If there’s one thing Austin lacks, it’s professional sports. In New York, there’s no shortage of professional sports – from the Yankees hitting homers at Yankee Stadium to the Knicks dribbling it out at Madison Square Garden. I’m excited for the chance to see some great sporting events.

There’s just a little over a month left until the wedding day. In middle of hashing out the final wedding details, I need to find NYC movers, and get everything together for our move. We’ll be starting our new life together in a small apartment we found on the Upper East Side, which means whatever doesn’t fit in our 1000-square foot space will end up sold or put in storage. Living with less is a sacrifice, but completely worth the experience of getting to live out my NYC dream life!
